Advancing evidence-based sustainability education across Europe
Join an interdisciplinary research network examining how inclusive, holistic climate education shapes learners, institutions and society.
The Bildung Climate School is accompanied by a long-term, interdisciplinary research programme designed to understand what this form of sustainability education actually does for students, partner institutions and wider society.
Our research is essential to evaluate impact, improve educational design and build a robust evidence base that allows the model to be transferred and scaled within the Netherlands and across Europe.

What we study
Four interconnected domains that define contemporary sustainability education in mixed learning environments.
Eco-anxiety
We explore how students emotionally and psychologically engage with climate challenges and how educational design can support agency, resilience and constructive engagement rather than withdrawal or distress.
Sustainability competences
Learn how to integrate sustainability as a lived practice rather than a standalone topic. We share teaching methods that connect climate awareness to everyday actions, institutional responsibility and long-term educational impact.
Socio-ecological resilience
We study how learners and institutions build collective capacities to respond to environmental and social change, focusing on adaptability, collaboration and long-term transformation.
Group dynamics in mixed MBO–HBO–WO classrooms
We analyse how students from different educational levels learn together, negotiate roles and build shared understanding in interdisciplinary and practice-based learning settings.

Research design & methodology
Mixed-methods, longitudinal and embedded across all programmes.
Quantitative and Qualitative Approaches
Our research combines quantitative and qualitative approaches to capture both measurable outcomes and lived experience. Methods include:
-
Surveys and experience-sampling methods
-
Interviews and focus groups
-
Ethnographic observation across all Bildung Climate School programmes
This design allows us to track change over time, compare outcomes across educational levels and develop new measurement tools where none yet exist, particularly for sustainability competences and collective resilience.

Collab With Us
Together, this trajectory positions the Bildung Climate School as one of the first systematically studied Bildung-inspired sustainability education models and lays the groundwork for future European research collaborations.
Strategic purpose
Building evidence, strengthening institutions and enabling European collaboration.
Our research programme serves three core functions:
1. Programme improvement
We explore how students emotionally and psychologically engage with climate challenges and how educational design can support agency, resilience and constructive engagement rather than withdrawal or distress.
2. Institutional embedding
Learn how to integrate sustainability as a lived practice rather than a standalone topic. We share teaching methods that connect climate awareness to everyday actions, institutional responsibility and long-term educational impact.
3. National and European scaling
We study how learners and institutions build collective capacities to respond to environmental and social change, focusing on adaptability, collaboration and long-term transformation.
